You can't argue with the talent of the Voodoo Circle lineup
or it's special guests. The project reminds me of the Brazen
Abbot Lineups that feature a variety of vocalists and musicians.
The problem most of these projects have is maybe the chemistry,
the players are all amazing, but sometimes an overall "feel"
is missing. You cannot deny the amazing musicianship and song-writing,
but it lacks an overall direction.
Some
of the album in more Prog-Metal based, others is AOR and then
some songs are purely Power Metal. One could argue that these
formats all go together, which is true, but it was hard for
me to listen and get in a groove. I felt bounced around a bit.
I was up for the opener "Spewing Lies" and the next
few tracks, but then I came some long songs that lost my interest
somewhat. Again, I'm coming from a radio standpoint too, that's
what I listen for and what I lean towards. Many of the songs
took too long to develop. There may be many who greatly appreciate
these epic songs, but for me I was a bit frustrated.
There
are enough highlights however to give this an overall good review,
and my undying respect for these guys is beyond words. It's
cliche to say "there's something for everyone", but
if you like melodic powerful music, you will be very pleased
with Voodoo Circle.
