Unearth is one band that stands ahead of the pack in the metalcore
genre. I've always liked their music because they step outside
the box, adding in other elements to keep it interesting. The
"in-your-face" production helps get the message across
loud and clear...and the louder, the better! I don't dislike
the hardcore style of music but it just gets stale after a while
and "The Mark" is like a kick to the face to all those
bands out there playing it safe. Genre name dropping aside,
this is a solid metal record from top to bottom. Super heavy,
riff-filled, and aggressive with some really impressive guitar
playing to boot. To say that this album is overly angry is wrong
though as this Boston based group mixes in a good amount of
meledy amongst the madness to achieve a sense of strong songwriting
balance. I wouldn't say this is better than their previous works
but that isn't exactly a bad thing. I think Unearth have wisely
built on an already solid foundation and are expanding on the
creative process, never wanting to be lumped in the mire of
metalcore mediocrity.
