SENTIENT MACHINE - "Sentient Machine" - 2009

New York's "Sentient Machine" is one of these bands that fits under a lot of different categories, picking one is almost impossible, but I would have to go with something under "Alternative Rock". This release if more of an extended EP than a full-length release and it give you a very good variety of music. They aren't afraid to crank up the guitars, there's definitely an edge to the music. They also do some experimental stuff too, like the track "Architecture Man". It's a trippy bizarre cut probably best listened to under some sort of mind-altering substance with strobe lights. Then you listen to "Screamer", a more strait-forward rocker with a chorus that goes, "I hear she's a screamer...". So they obviously are looking to establish themselves as somewhat unpredictable. Covering "Disco Inferno" give more evidence to my assumptions. I should mention that cover is very cool, it's a complete remake of the song and almost unrecognizable at times, which in my opinion is just fine! The other notable songs is "James Brown New Year's Eve Bash", and one hard to describe really, it's funky of course, but it contains some very interesting sounds, guitar work and a tripped out vibe. Overall the ensemble of musicians put together here are very good, they are all very accomplished musicians and this release deserves a listen. You might love it or hate it, but it is going to make you think and you're going to hear some things you will never hear from a major label band.
