Sekond Skyn provides a solid dose of American Metal. The East
Coast machine pounds out 13 tracks of well-crafted tunes. They're
an independent band, but that hasn't stopped them from putting
out a good quality product. There's a lot of different elements
here, they utilized the clean/dirty vocal sound very well, frontman
Jon Follet actually has a great singing voice with some gothic
overtones that helps separate this band from a lot of the other
heavy bands coming out of the States.
The
guitar duo of Eddie Heedles and Mark Monjoy are more finese
players than flare and style. They have a nice groove and play
with heavy intensity. The band as a whole is pretty tight, there's
a few spots that could fit together better, but they havn't
been together for so terrible long and the positives by far
out-weigh the negatives. Songs like "The Pit", "Scorned"
and "The Vanity" really show me something, these songs
especially were memorable and had some good hooks. Their cover
of Men At Work's "Land Down Under" was deliciously
twisted and another highlight for me. They took a song that
is far from Metal and made it work, THAT is a good sign of a
band with talent and good writing abilities.
They
might not have an international appeal, but they'll fit well
into the current scene in North America and even into South
America as well. They have little European Metal influences,
but having said that, they aren't so extreme that the more traditional
will refuse to listen, in fact they will probably find them
as likeable as I did.
