Jive
Mother Mary (great name btw) isn't exactly reinventing the wheel
with their gritty Bluesy Hard Rock, but somehow it sounds very
fresh and inviting. The trio from North Carolina play music
that is authentic and real, it sounds almost exactly what you'd
expect from the South, heart-filled bluesy rock. John Custer
produced and engineered the release. Custer was behind some
amazing music over the years including being involved with bands
like Cry Of Love, C.O.C., Dag, and numerous soundtracks and
other projects. His influences really show through into the
music, he has always brought out the best in the bands he's
worked with.
So,
what do they sound like? Well, there's the obvious comparisons
of Black Crowes, and the fore-mentioned Cry Of Love. You could
through in Kenny Wayne Sheppard and just about every blues-based
rock band you'd like. At times they have a trippy Zeppelin sound,
like on "Catalina", where they seem to almost channel
Plant and Page somehow. If I had to pick a song that really
makes them stand out would be this one. For the more strait
up rockers, there's some chunky riffs and grooves on songs like
"Let Me In", "All Fall Down" and "Bedroom
Eyes".
You
could look at the release as a tribute to Classic Rock and what
was so wonderful about the music coming from the 70's. They've
put enough modern feel to it that it's still relevant in today's
world. I'm not sure if radio is going to "get it"
but they should certainly have the abilty to develop a world-wide
fan base of people with good taste in music.
