Impellitteri - Wicked Maiden SPV/Steamhammer 2009

Ok, so if you are a fan of guitar-shredding metal music and you don't know who Chris Impellitteri is by now I'll give you one chance to redeem yourself. This guy has been churning out shred albums for over 20 years now and WICKED MAIDEN is a sure statement that he is not slowing down. The great thing about the incredible musicians from the old days who've stuck around is that modern production adds that extra special element to their music. Wicked Maiden just hammers the point home. There's some spots on here that actually made me cringe but that's my personal taste. I'm just not a fan of cheesy-type, over the top lyrics even though these moments are obviously tounge-in-cheek by the band. It is, however, refreshing to see such talented musicians that don't seem to take themselves too seriously. When this band gets down to business though, it is a much different story. Joined once again by former singer Rob Rock, the majority of WICKED MAIDEN is just text-book melodic metal madness surrounded by Impellitteri's amazing soloing skills. It is definitely not a one man show though as each musician's talent makes the tunes flow like a well oiled machine. It really is impressive how they can make it all sound so easy. Highly impressive playing and for the most part a very fun album to listen to.
