When you've reached legendary status like Deep Purple's Ian
Gillian you can pretty much do what you want and "One Eye
To Morroco" is an example of a guy just doing some fun
music he wants to do. Most of the material is considerably lighter
than the Deep Purple material, but I found myself enjoy the
laid back "at the beach" atmosphere. He almost got
into some Jimmy Buffet ground on the album. It's a very relaxing
project with some fine grooves and melody. He sounds like he's
a guy enjoying retirement somewhere warm and sunny. He shows
why he should be mentioned more often by the press too, no offense
to others from this age group, but Deep Purple and Gillian are
far more influential than they get credit for. Gillian proves
here that you don't have to rip your face off every time out
to make an enjoyable album, maybe I'm getting older too, but
I really enjoyed the music on "One Eye To Morroco".
I'm just glad he's making new music and from the sounds of it,
enjoying himself, he certainly deserves it.
