NEBULA - "Peel Sessions" - Cargo Records

I'm not sure that if you played something from "Peel Sessions" and something from the late 60's you would really be able to tell which was recorded recently. This is probably why Nebula is such a big name in the world of Stoner Rock. They literally manage to transport you back in time when Hendrix and Zeppelin ruled the world.

The "Peel Sessions" are "tracks pulled from the the BBC's John Peel sessions and a Radio One broadcast that the band recorded between 2002 and 2004". There's tracks that cover their career that started in the late 90's when Guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano left Fu Manchu to form the band. What they created was a band that really defines what Stoner Rock is about and the "Peel Session" really showcase the band's talents and true sound.

Glass is an amazing and underrated guitarist, and anyone who argures that point needs to listen to this CD. No, he's not playing at a blistering speed and doing headstands with hit frets on fire. He IS doing some amazing technical blues work on the strings that SHOULD impress anyone who clamins to be a rocker. I used to fall prey to judging a guitarst by pure technical ability, guitarists like Glass have proven to me that it's not all about the speed and precision. He "talks" to you during the extended jams with his axe that bring back memories of the previously mentioned Jimi Hendrix.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this band or on this mysterious genre of "Stoner" music, so I won't sit and tell you how great or shitty the playlist is. Bottom line, it seems to be a good mix of their music. Ok, I admit I would have picked some more of their rockin' material, but that's not really what this project is about, the songs they pick have a general trippy feeling to them, giving the CD a consistent flow. It's a nice laid back project that sounds great just chilling out with a few beers or maybe your favorite mind-altering substance. Having said that, you can also just enjoy the music with a clear head, it's really accessible Rock N' Roll for anyone to appreciate.
