The
addition of Tim "Ripper" Owens of Judas Priest/Iced
Earth fame was a nice addition to the Malmsteen sound. The music
is also more aggressive than before, he really attacks the frets
harder than before. The songs are good, not great, but his playing
normally overshadows the songs anyway. I'm always blown away
when I hear him too because there's still nobody out there like
him! Love him or hate him, you can't deny his is one of the
all-time greats.
The
music is very traditional Power Metal, as it always has been.
He does mix up the tempos quite a to provide some variety as
well here, so it's not really fair to say one song is better
than the next. My major complaint, again, is that the production
is a bit muddy. Malmsteen and Roy Z did the work this time,
and much like a lot of Roy Z's work, it's maybe a bit to modern
and fails to really bring out Yngwie's amazing style. I can
already tell that some critics will claim that he's really not
as fast or as acurate because of the muddy production. I say
this only provies he is better than we think because despite
the average production he manages to cut through and blown you
away.
